Style

Okay, your not going to see a lot of FS2 websites with a "style" page. To explain: most Freespace campaigns can be classified into one of two types: Expansions of the Freespace 2 Universe and Total Conversions. There are a few, like Ellis Station, that find a middle ground.

Ellis uses the Freespace engine and models and it's own universe. (Kind of a "total conversion" without the needed skillset.) This leaves the Ellis staff with a problem. How do we give the player the feel of playing Ellis when so much of what the player's doing is standard FS2?

We've approached this from several angles.

First, we've gotten permission to use a large number of the superb community-made models. When you fly an Ellis mission, a lot of what you see flying around you is not canon FS2.

Second, many of missions themselves feature fleet actions. Charger has used his knowledge of actual US Navy practice and formations to create a different kind of mission.

Third, briefings have more "personality". There is some hint (well, more than a hint, really) of the interpersonal tensions between Alpha 1's superior officers, a look at why some of the missions happen.

Fourth, names. We have compiled extensive lists of ship names, broken down by class. Each ship class, as in Real Life™, has a theme. There has also been thought given to geographic and personal names in the Ellis universe - we've made the attempt to give them a different "flavor" from standard FS2.

We hope, when all these things are taken together, the player will know he's playing a different type of campaign.
