FreeSpace 2: Game Preview

The best way to find out about the FreeSpace 2 Demo is, of course, to download the demo from Volition Inc. and play the demo yourself. While you're there, be sure to get the FreeSpace 2 demo patch as well. However, not everyone is able to download a large 60.4 MB demo.

If you're only looking for a quick preview of FreeSpace 2 as a general overview, I'd suggest the Descent Chronicles FreeSpace 2 Game Information or the GameSpot FreeSpace 2 Preview. But if you want to read the most comprehensive and complete guide available to what the demo shows can be expected from FreeSpace 2, continue on to read the next twelve pages.

List of Key Demo Features

The key features of the FreeSpace 2 demo can be covered in a few quick bullet points:

  • Stunning real-time in-nebula missions with sensor interference and electrical storms.
  • Fantastic capital ship battles, including the new beam weapons and anti-fighter flak cannons.
  • Twelve (12) new ship classes, including the Corvette-class capital ships.
  • Two single player missions, plus one training mission.
  • Two multiplayer missions, including the new 12-player Dogfight mode!
  • Full PXO support for multiplayer, including chatrooms, game lists, and pilot stats rankings.

List of Key Game Features

More factual information about the game itself and its features can be found in our FreeSpace 2 Information & FAQ. However, these important highlights of FreeSpace 2 are not seen in the demo:

  • Over 90 single and multi player missions, with an extensive new storyline.
  • Over 90 space-faring vessels, and over 115 different ships to encounter.
  • Over 25 ships to pilot, both Terran and Vasudan, in single and multi player.
  • Bigger and more powerful capital ships, including a Juggernaut capital ship class that is virtually indestructible and spans six kilometers.
  • Squad War integrated into the free multiplayer matching and score tracking service on PXO.
  • Mission Editor (FRED 2), allowing anyone to create and customize their own missions and campaigns.

Now that we've disposed of the basic facts, let's cover a major concern -- the technical requirements of FreeSpace 2.
