| Guard Missions All pilots must realize that the
capital ships in FreeSpace 2 are far more powerful than
their FreeSpace 1 counterparts and should also keep in
mind that the defensive umbrella of a destroyer or corvet
can threaten even friendly targets should they get in the
way.
Lean the firing arcs of
friendly capital ships so that you can better protect the
capital ship on the whole. Improvements in bomb
technology have yeilded more powerful warheads with
faster engines that make them much more difficult to hit.
Use the 'B' key to target incoming bombs and knock them
down with your primaries. Use the lead indicator at all
times.
Assault Missions
Assault
missions come in different styles and varieties but there
are some fundamental aspects that define all of them.
Usually these missions bring large numbers of friendly
fighters and sometimes capital ships in contact with
enemy forces, generally in enemy territory. Keep in mind
that your foe probably has more resources to call apon
and you must conserve every ship you possibly can.
Strike
missions are far more difficult than before. Anti-fighter
beams, flak cannons, and pulse lasers are all effective
at defending your target. Bomber pilots should be aware
of these threats and attempt to neutralize them with the
forces they have.
Particullarly
with the Helios bomb, taking a run at your target can be
very effective. Start away from your target at about 3000
meters. Lock your target, engage your engines and get
close to your target. At about 300 meters, hit the
afterburners, fire your bombs and pull away, jucing the
afterburners once again to get away. This will launch
your bombs at a faster speed and increase the chances of
scoring a hit.
