FreeSpace 2: Game Preview

Multi Player Mission 2 - Cooperative Mode - Continued

Find a good group of fighter and bombers pilots that can work together, and you'll find the mission to be easy. But fail to cooperate as a team and you'll have significant difficulty completing the mission. At best, the mission will take much longer than usual to complete.

However, you can't beat the thrill of taking out two Shivan capital ships in this mission. When the cavalry arrives to finish off the last capital ship, you're treated to a great display of fireworks. Usually, the crippled Shivan ship has no defense against the fully-charged beam weapons of the fresh GTVA ship. Just be sure to sit back and stay out of the cross-fire, or you'll learn how deadly beam weapons can be in FreeSpace 2. What makes this mission so fun is that you feel a sense of accomplishment during your temporary tour with the 77th squad of "the Deadly Sevens."

Multi Player - Squad Wars

FreeSpace 2 is designed to promote the system of Squads (similar to Quake Clans), by permitting players to customize their fighter by using a squad logo. Squads are typically groups of multiplayer pilots who form wings of four to six pilots to regularly play cooperative missions with each other or challenge the other Squads to combat. The FreeSpace community includes small squads, loosely organized squads, and a few quite large squads with over thirty members.

Volition created Squad War as a "tournament" mode similar to the ladders in other games. Basically, a map of the FreeSpace universe is divided into areas controlled by different Squads. The Squads then can challenge each other for territory, with the goal of conquering enough systems to be declared the winner of the league. Squad Wars is not included in the FreeSpace 2 demo, but will be run on Parallax Online and Squad War sites with support by Volition Inc.

Whether you partcipate in the Squad War ladder or not, "team-based" missions will allow Squads to enjoy impromptu missions without the fear of losing territory. Although the FreeSpace 2 demo does not contain a team mission, these misssions would involve two teams facing in different battles. One team might defend a capital ship while the other attacks it, or both teams might attempt to destroy the other's capital ship while defending their own. The team-based missions will support up to eight different players, four on each team.
