FRED: Using the Mouse
Action Effect
Left click Select object under pointer
Lasso (drag a rectangle around some stuff) Mark several objects and select one
Shift click Mark object, and select it if nothing is selected
Ctrl click Create a new object of the type indicated by the toolbar object list
Drag object Possibly move or rotate object, depending on selection controls
Ctrl drag Copy marked objects to a new location

Objects are ships, waypoints, jump nodes, nav buoys, and lone asteroids. (Lone asteroids are rare; you'd usually use the asteroid field editor to produce an area full of asteroids.)

The difference between "marked" and "selected" is subtle: you can only have one object selected, but you can have several marked. Also, beware that FRED does not always use these terms consistently.

There is a strong temptation (especially if you've just watched Return of the Jedi or certain episodes of Babylon 5) to build an enormous battle with dozens of capital ships. Don't go overboard; the mission will take too long to play, even the fastest machine will slow to a crawl, and FreeSpace may even crash. Your missions should be on the same scale as the official ones.
