Model Texturing Tutorial
By: Robert "Sparks" Delinsky

Introduction

Welcome to the First Edition of the Freespace Model Texturing Tutorial. This file will help explain how you can create your own ships and structures for the games Descent:Freespace and Freespace2. Its based in part on information gathered from the Freespace Developers List, and a lot of trial and error in using the programs!

The tutorial is based on using some very specific programs, and may not help if you use any other software. All the programs used for the tutorial are available via the Internet as time-limited commercial software or as shareware/freeware programs.

The programs that you must have are:

Other programs that may be useful:

  • PaintShopPro, version 5 or version 6, available from the JASC Software web site
  • Descent Manager Freespace Kit, available from the Descent Network web site

PaintShopPro and Truespace are commercial programs with time-limited functionality, while Cob2fs, Cob2fs2, and Descent Manager Freespace Kit are freeware programs.

NOTE: There is a fully functional version of Truespace, version 1 available, but I found errors in its operation of saving and restoring UV mapping coordinates, and this makes it unacceptable for our modeling use. I do not recommend using this version of Truespace. You still can use it if you wish to create stand-alone objects (the *.COB files), but you'll then have to import them into Truespace2 to apply textures to complete your model.

I would like to thank Garry Knudson for explaining the use of openGL and texturing, and operation of his FSView and Cob2fs programs, along with all the members of the Freespace Developers List, who's questions, answers, and comments made this tutorial possible.

Also, many thanks to Volition Inc, Mike Kulas, Adam Pletchar and the whole Freespace development team for making the BEST space-combat simulation games for 1998 and 1999. Without their help, we would've never known how to make modifications or create our own models for Freespace.
