These are the official screenshots released by Volition, Inc. Each file links to a larger version (640 x 480), which are packaged all in one ZIP file. Commentary by Zarathud follows each group of screenshots.
The above screenshots are of the same capital ship. It appears to be Vasudan by the color and texturing. These screenshots also show the firing of the new beam weapons, while the middle top screenshot shows the Vasudan capital ship being hit by a beam weapon. Capital ships are certainly much more dangerous when armed with these beam weapons.
These screenshots show how objects in the battlefield are obscured by the nebula effect, a fog-like battlefield condition. The far right screenshot shows capital ships trading shots broadside, if you pay attention to the weapon trails. More dangerous and less easy of a target, but I'm sure they're still massive so at least you'll at least hit something...
This set of screenshots shows off the intense dogfighting. Notice in the far left all the little "bursts" around the target. That can only be the "flak guns" we've heard about, which promise to make strafing runs on capital ships much more interesting -- perhaps even frightening as well... The middle screenshot shows the gorgeous trails of weapons fire and highlights the detailing on the ship model. Very nice, as is the explosion effect in the far right. What looked good before is still good, and the new stuff looks gorgeous. Drool on...
More beam weapons in action, with several different capital ships. In this batch we're seeing what are likely (from left to right, based on the coloring and silouettes) some new Vasudan, Shivan, and Terran capital ships. And they all have beam weapons, so the storyline should be a little more interesting than the Shivans strolling through the back yard of the Terrans and Vausdans in search of some homeworlds to obliterate from the galaxy. Finally, some real action!
A Shivan capital ship in the nebula, showing how the massive capital ships will blend into the nebula to obscure some sections of the ship while still leaving other parts exposed. This nebula effect is definitely more realistic and interesting than the nebula background texture from FreeSpace 1, shown in the last set of screenshots. This should create for very different gameplay options. Also notice all the missiles the capital ship is firing, showing that it is armed to the teeth. An interesting view along the side of a ship in the nebula, either one of the gas miners or some strange new weapon. Note the excellent detailing along the side of the ship. Sure, you might not see this immediately in the nebula, but when you do...you're going to notice that detail! |
